Richard “Scoop” Koehler

The day of our meeting, February 7, 2007 was Richard “Scoop” Koehler’s 50-year anniversary of his professional photo career.

Richard is one of our Honorary Members. His first paid photo assignment was on this date in 1957. He was working for the Newport Harbor News Press at that time and he was shooting a Newport Harbor basket ball game. His camera was a 4X5 Speed Graphic.

Richard went on to work for the Daily Pilot for twenty years, the LA Times for eighteen years and is now doing freelance work.

On a personal note, Richard was always my favorite media representative to show up at any crime scene or traffic collision. Unlike others, he never got in the way, he always knew what to do and not to do and he would even help us if we needed it.
