Peg Cully
Peg was born in Detroit Michigan and was an only child. After high school, she attended Michigan State and graduated with a degree in journalism. She was editor of the school paper.
She met Ray (her husband) who was a campus police officer at the time. Peg went on to the University of Michigan and received a Masters Degree in English Literature. Ray worked as a civil engineer. In 1970, they were transferred to Southern California and bought their home in the Newport Beach Eastbluff area.
Although she had been teaching school, she decided to give the PD a try. In 1976, she went to work in Records. She was shocked to learn that her first day on the job would be a Saturday! After a short stint in Records, she was asked by Capt. Heeres if she would be interested in the Administrative Division Secretary position. She accepted the position and stayed there until she retired in 1986.
While at the PD, Peg typed a number of papers for sworn personnel who were enrolled in masters programs. She said all of those employees got raises and she “didn’t get a dime.”
Captain Jacobs once told Peg that he had a video from Michigan State and asked Peg if she wanted to see it. She said she did and almost immediately realized that she didn’t recognize any of the buildings or people. She then realized it was a porno film!
Once, some very nice green plants began sprouting in a potted plant near Peg’s desk. She said she thought they were marigolds. She was later shocked to learn that they were marijuana plants and that Jim Carson had planted some marijuana seeds in the pot!
She and Ray had five children. One son is a retired Army Lt. Colonel who was a helicopter pilot and had assignments in Special Forces and in Intelligence. Another son is a retired Top Gun and F-14 pilot. Another son is a businessman in Anaheim Hills. One daughter lives in Irvine and another in San Diego. The daughter in San Diego lost her home in the 2003 fire.
Peg and Ray have been married for sixty years. To celebrate their 60th anniversary Peg and Ray took the whole family on a cruise. She and Ray were able to do this because they bought their home in Eastbluff for $46K and sold it for $1.4M. Peg and Ray now live in San Diego.
