People Who Had an Impact on Your Career: Jim Jacobs – 1st supervisor (Records) – set the tone of conduct and cooperation expected by the Department. He remained my favorite supervisor all sixteen years but I never worked for him again [after Records].
A Special Event or Moment that You Remember About Your Time at NBPD: “Circa 1975 or 1976 – On a quiet Saturday in Records, a Cadet was learning to run 1028’s and 1029’s and L1’s on the computer. He decided to run Patricia Hearst. About five minutes later, an angry, apoplectic Reed Gloshen yelled through the WC’s window – “Who ran Patty Hearst?” Bev and I ducked behind some cabinets. Seems the FBI was calling. When I started at the old station, we had some antique computer that printed on a perforated tape. If there was an error, the whole thing had to be re-entered. Morning Watch clerks had to type all misdemeanor arrest reports for the Court Liaison by court time that morning. No Dispatch crew, just McCabe and Sorenson, doubling as phone operators. They let Jan Davis “sit in.” (She became the first female dispatcher!)
We got to meet “The Duke” when he came in to be printed for opening the John Wayne Tennis Club. He would attend City Council Meetings next door to Records.
The “new station” was beautiful, but never as much fun as the old one. Guess that’s because it’s where I met Billy Speirs.”
